Did you know that a Rockdale Education Foundation grant helps turn elementary school students into confident stage performers year after year?
At Honey Creek Elementary, project lead Maria Gonzalez-Hernandez brings learning off the page and into the spotlight through full-scale musical productions like Annie, Ragtime, and Seussical the Musical!. Instead of just studying literature, music, and history in the classroom, students in grades 3–5 take the stage to sing, act, dance, and manage behind-the-scenes production—connecting core subjects like English Language Arts, Social Studies, STEM, and the Fine Arts in real time.
What makes this program extraordinary is the mentorship bridging grade levels:
-
High School Leadership: Theater students from Heritage High School step in as mentors, coaching elementary peers in vocal prep, choreography, costumes, lighting, sound, and set design.
-
Hands-on Service: High schoolers gain vital capstone and leadership experience while showing younger students where a passion for the arts can lead.
-
Confidence Beyond the Stage: Elementary students discover hidden talents, learn to command an audience, and build lasting self-assurance that carries directly back into the classroom.
How Your Support Makes It Happen
Staging a full musical requires resources that go beyond typical classroom budgets. Year after year, the Rockdale Education Foundation provides essential funding that helps to bring these shows to life, covering:
- Performance script licensing
- Costumes and wardrobe
- Stage set pieces and technical materials
The final curtain may come down, but the creativity, teamwork, and confidence these students build last for years to come.
